In textile printing and dyeing processes, caustic soda plays an irreplaceable core role—whether it is fully swelling cottonseed hulls and other impurities during scouring, or effectively activating hydrogen peroxide during bleaching. However, while removing impurities, caustic soda also affects the cotton fibers themselves: excessive caustic soda at high temperatures aggressively attacks the cellulose molecular chains, triggering a severe "peeling reaction" , which leads to a significant decrease in fiber strength and a marked increase in weight loss. The treatment of waste liquor containing high concentrations of caustic soda is also a serious issue—if discharged directly without proper treatment, it can cause substantial environmental harm. Therefore, how to apply the appropriate amount of alkali in the process is one of the key challenges for the textile industry to reduce costsand improve efficiency.
In the conventional pre-treatment process, caustic soda is used in scouring to swell cottonseed hulls and other impurities, causing them to detach from the fibers. In bleaching, 2% O.W.F. caustic soda at least is required, which raises the bath pH to 12–14. Such a highly alkaline environment not easily damages the fabric fibers, leading to excessive weight loss and additional economic losses, but further complicates wastewater treatment.
To address this pain point, BBT has developed a novel Bio-scouring enzyme RF. this enzyme efficiently decomposes pectin and other impurities on the fabric surface during the gradual heating-up period at lower dosage of caustic soda, thereby not saving scouring time but significantly improving the fabric's absorbency. Moreover, RF has the advantage of reducing the caustic soda dosage in the bleaching stage. Compared with the conventional process, under the same temperature, time, and dosages of hydrogen peroxide and peroxide stabilizer, using RF requires only 0.5% O.W.F. of caustic soda, and the whiteness value can still reach the same as regular process . The reduction in caustic soda usage not lowersthe enterprise’s wastewater treatment costs but resolves the problem of excessive fabric weight loss.
In summary, the application of BBT bio-scouring enzyme RF in the pre-treatment process of towels can effectively reduce caustic soda consumption while ensuring bleaching whiteness, simultaneously improve fabric absorbency and reduce weight loss, and alleviate the burden of wastewater treatment for the enterprise. This solution balances product quality, production costs, and environmental compliance, making it a worthwhile optimized pre-treatment solution.
