Bio-polishing is an important means of improving the surface quality of cotton fabrics. Fabrics woven from natural fibers such as cotton and hemp, when treated with cellulase, can effectively remove surface pilling and achieve a clean, smooth fabric surface. Cellulase is also the most widely applied enzyme category in the textile industry, classified into three major types according to pH characteristics: acid, neutral, and alkaline cellulases. Acid cellulase was the earliest to be applied. However, as the textile industry has continuously raised its requirements for processing mildness, process compatibility, and fabric protection, neutral and alkaline cellulases emerged and have gradually expanded the application boundaries of cellulase.
Alkaline cellulase exhibits the highest activity in an alkaline environment of pH 9.0–10.5. Its mechanism of action involves hydrolyzing the fine pillings on the cotton fiber surface, causing entrapped particulate soils to lose their anchoring points and fall off. Since household laundry detergents are predominantly alkaline, alkaline cellulase can be well formulated with them, making it an ideal choice for modern laundry powders and liquids. However, its application in textile processing remains extremely limited.
In the textile industry, the cellulases used for Bio-polishing are mainly acid and neutral cellulases. Conventional Bio-polishing processes have mostly employed acid cellulase. However, under acidic conditions, the glycosidic bonds in cotton fibers are sensitive to acid, and the acid and enzyme produce a synergistic hydrolysis effect, leading to fiber damage to the fabric itself and an increase in weight loss, thereby affecting the finished product quality.
