For towel manufacturers, fabric weight loss is one of the key quality indicators during the pre-treatment process. An appropriate level of weight loss helps remove natural impurities from cotton fibers, while excessive weight loss reduces the fabric weight (GSM) and may negatively affect fabric strength, loop fullness, and product durability, resulting in increased production costs. Therefore, how to minimize unnecessary fabric weight loss while ensuring effective pre-treatment has become an important objective for towel mills seeking to optimize their production process.
Since towels are woven products, warp yarns are subjected to high tension during weaving. Therefore, sizing is generally required to improve yarn abrasion resistance and weaving efficiency. However, to ensure good bleaching and dyeing performance in the subsequent process, the starch size on the yarn surface, together with natural impurities such as pectin and waxes in the cotton fibers, must be removed through desizing and scouring after weaving.
Conventional towel pre-treatment generally consists of desizing, scouring, bleaching, and bio-polishing. During the scouring stage, a large amount of caustic soda is typically added, and the fabric is treated at 70°C for 40 minutes. When the fabric is exposed to a highly alkalineenvironment for an extended period, or when the process is not properly controlled, not only are natural impurities removed, but the cotton fibers themselves may also be damaged, resulting in the loss of part of the fiber material and increased fabric weight loss. In addition, conventional bio-polishing is generally carried out using acidic cellulase. If the enzyme dosage or treatment time is not properly controlled, it may further increase fabric weight loss.
To address the limitations of conventional processes, BBT has developed RF838-W, a composite bio-scouring enzyme that enables biological desizing, bio-scouring, and wetting simultaneously at 55°C for 30 minutes, providing a more efficient solution for towel pre-treatment. The amylase in the product rapidly hydrolyzes the starch size applied during weaving, allowing the size to be removed more easily during washing and providing a clean fabric surface for subsequent processing. The alkaline pectinase selectively degrades pectin in cotton fibers, while the wetting agent and scouring agent facilitate the removal of waxes and other natural impurities. This ensures effective scouring while reducing damage to the cotton fibers. For towel products requiring bio-polishing, BBT also provides a neutral cellulase for the polishing process. Compared with conventional acidic cellulase, neutral cellulase selectively acts on protruding surface fuzz on the fabric, improving fabric smoothness and softness while minimizing its action on the main fiber structure. This helps achieve an effective bio-polishing result whilereducing the additional fabric weight loss caused by polishing.
Compared with the conventional high-alkali scouring process, RF838-W uses the catalytic specificity of enzymes to reduce the consumption of caustic soda. While effectively removing natural impurities, it also minimizes damage to cotton fibers, thereby reducing fabric weight loss. Towels treated with the bio-scouring process also exhibit good wettability and absorbency, providing a more uniform foundation for subsequent bleaching and dyeing and contributing to more consistent product quality. In addition, RF838-W helps simplify the pre-treatment process and lower COD and BOD levels in wastewater, thereby helping towel manufacturers achieve greener and more sustainable production.
