In recent years, a new stone-washing process known as enzyme wash has been introduced. Cellulase is utilized to specifically break down cotton fibers on the surface of denim, stripping off dyes from the fabric and creating the distinctive vintage aesthetic unique to denim garments. This process can replace pumice stones to achieve a worn, aged finish.
Temperature is a key factor affecting various physical and chemical reactions, and a core process parameter for denim washing. The processing temperature directly determines the frosting efficiency and finished appearance of denim fabrics. As protein-based biological catalysts, cellulases are temperature-sensitive, so the operating temperature range must be controlled during production.Moderate temperature rise within the suitable range can boost cellulase activity. Nevertheless, excessive temperature intensifies enzymatic degradation of cotton fibers, reducing fabric tensile strength. In addition, highertemperatures raise energy consumption costs and increase the difficulty of stable process control. Conversely, low-temperature operation cuts heating costs yet suppresses enzymatic activity significantly, preventing cellulase from exerting its full catalytic performance and failing to achieve the desired worn washing effect.
To address the aforesaid temperature-related challenges, the R&D team of BBT has developed the NEF®2200+ and NEF®GP3 series neutral cellulases. These are concentrated neutral cellulase granule for denim stone free process. They apply in the range of 30-50 ℃ and have a wide applicable temperature window. It broadens the stable activity range of the enzyme and maintains high catalytic efficiency at medium and low temperatures. Uniform and soft denim fading effect can be achieved without drastic temperature rise.Meanwhile, there is no risk of excessive hydrolysis of denim cotton fibers by cellulase under high temperatures, which would otherwise reduce the fiber strength of denim. It lowers the requirement for high temperature and cuts energy consumption. The neutralcellulase NEF®2200 and NEF®GP3 feature excellent stability, which can reduce defective products including color difference and uneven fading induced by temperature fluctuations, and perfectly tackle the industry pain points of traditional enzyme preparations: poor temperature adaptability and high difficulty in process control.
