The attachment and fixation of dyes both depend on water as a carrier. Reactive dyes, direct dyes, and others must be dissolved in water and diffuse into the fiber interior through the tiny channels within the fiber—particularly the amorphous regions of cotton fibers. Therefore, good absorbency ensures that both the interior and exterior of the fiber are fully exposed to dyes and auxiliaries. If the fiber has poor absorbency (e.g., due to incomplete wax removal), the dye liquor cannot penetrate uniformly, easily resulting in surface color staining or uneven dyeing.

The key to improving the absorbency of knitwear fabrics lies in whether the chemical scouring during pre-treatment is thorough. Conventionally, high-temperature strong alkali (caustic soda) scouring combined with hydrogen peroxide bleaching has been used to effectively remove natural impurities such as waxes, pectins, and cottonseed hulls, exposing thehydrophilic cellulosic structure of the cotton fiber and thus fundamentally enhancing absorbency.

However, does good absorbency necessarily guarantee good dyeing results? yes. Good absorbency is a necessary prerequisite for good dyeing performance, but it is not a sufficient condition. If excessive hydrolytic damage or crystallinity changes occur during pre-treatment, even with excellent absorbency, the number of effective dye reaction sites may decrease, leading to lower color yield. The high-concentration, high-temperature, and prolonged use of caustic soda in conventional processes can cause excessive hydrolytic damage to cellulosic fibers. In other words, improved absorbency in conventional processes does not necessarily translate into superior dyeing results.
